Learning about life from a different perspective

Feb. 1 2008

My living arrangement have now become settled and rhythmic, allowing me the freedom to explore new territories and experience a new depth in my studies. I mentioned before that I moved in with a Chinese family of three: two young, energetic parents and their equally energetic, if not more so, 6-year-old son. Our apartment sits on the first floor of a tall brick building, surrounded by a flock of more like-colored buildings. This community swarms with foreigners as many of the teachers from one of the local international schools live here.

My new family stirs with a strange energy, rarely seen in most people I’ve met here. The mother is a Chinese language tutor, and frequently, I find Americans sitting at our dinner table poring over complicated characters and repeating phrases after her. The father tutors the son in the evening, and then the family tries to sit down together for a quick meal every night. The apartment crawls with cold, but my family wears lots of clothes, drinks hot water and ends up saving a lot on heating. So I am learning: “When in Rome…” My room, quiet and subdued, works perfectly for studying and meditation. No loud recycled goods collectors wander our narrow paths, and the pop of Spring Festival’s firecrackers is disappearing as people go back to work.

Feb. 2 2008
At school, I work hard at my four-hour class every morning, and my new classmates add wonderfully to the group. A Canadian woman, two American men and myself study under three different teachers who rotate over the course of the week. I keep a running record of things learned in class and post them to my blog daily, an exercise that proves its worth every time I use a new structure with my Chinese family. I participate in a writer’s group, am involved in a study of scholarly texts, attend church on Sundays and get together with friends.

I thought I was adjusting well, but shifting cultural perspectives is difficult ad often involves pain. Even though my school environment has been welcoming to my learning my established sanctuary was inevitably shaken due to my pride. Earlier, I had had the audacity to sit in class and tell one of my teachers that she was wrong and I was right. When she finally voiced her frustration and explained that I was rude and should not interrupt but listen with humility, I was surprised, touched and embarrassed. For the first time, I was on the other side of the fence, looking at a different world. Thankfully, we never finish growing. I am thankful for moments like those when I have been forced to think beyond myself. Crossing cultures is challenging, but rewarding.

Swarm(v)

Facing Criticism at the Top
One can feel lonely and thin-skinned at the top of the corporate ladder

Procter & Gamble CEO A.G. Lafley finds out what his employees really think about him when the receives the results of his 360-degree feedback evaluation. The human resources tool that assesses strengths and weaknesses can be brutally honest because it lets a circle of people from executives on down give him anonymous performance reviews. The results show that others at P$G think Lafley is impatient. Lafley must also test the patience of other because he is severely criticized for being chronically late to meetings.

Feedback leads to growth
Most CEOs would be tempted to cut 360-degree feedback from the budget. That's because most CEOs avoid criticism. It can be frustrating, Lafley says. After all, he must be doing things right to have risen to the top of 138,00 employees in 80 countries. P$G stock has been setting new highs, and Lafley was named one of America’s Best Leaders in 2006 by U.S. News & World Report. But Lafley accepts the body blows because he says feedback leads to growth. He even schedules time with the most relentless critics such as animal rights groups that object to testing on rodents.

Surprising findings
Such openness is not common in Corporate America’s corner offices. A study by the HR firm PsyMax Solutions found that there is something about that last job promotion that makes many other CEOs suddenly ungracious. PsyMax surveyed 13,000 employees, including 242 CEOs, to determine which ones were resilient, thick-skinned and good at taking criticism. PsyMax called it being tough minded. Among non-management workers, 83 percent had those qualities. But something happens to those who take the last step up: Just 65.5 percent of CEOs, presidents and chief operating officers were tough-minded.

“That wasn’t a finding we expected, but it holds up statistically,” says PayMax CEO Wayne Nemeroff.

Strictly speaking, there are only two kinds of jiaozi: boiled and steamed. While not classified as jiaozi, other kinds of dumplings are also enjoyed by Chinese. Guo tie, pan-fried dumplings known as "potstickers" in North America, are a popular snack. Wontons, dumplings with a very thin outer layer, are often found in soup. Some dumplings can even have soup inside of them, like the mouthwatering xiao long bao.

To many families, dumplings are a must-have part of Chinese New Year celebrations. Family members often prepare jiaozi together before the meal. The shape is similar to a gold ingot, a kind of ancient money. So jiaozi have become a symbol of wealth. Some families hide a coin in one of the dumplings. They believe that the person who finds the coin will have good fortune in the coming year.

Despite the world's wide range of dumplings, jiaozi are the most loved at Chinese New Year!

Reluctant to admit mistakes
Being sequestered from criticism can lead to an arrogance that may have contributed to a long string of Enron-like executive lawbreakers, says author Jeffrey Sonnenfeld. But why do executives who accept criticism on the way up suddenly shun if after they get the last big promoting? One reason may be that they never really got a lot of criticism because they were seldom wrong along the way. BNy the time they make the cover of a magazine, they believe in themselves and won’t listen to detractors Sonnenfeld says. \That is a mistake in itself because the pattern of heroes throughout history has been to err, suffer and learn.

Leaders too often “suffer from narcissism and grandiosity that blind them to the shortcomings of their own character,” says Jean Lipman-Blumen, author of The Allure of Toxic Leadrs.

Leading wisely
The best CEOs surround themselves with smart people who will say no, says Nell Minow, a corporate governance expert, One of the first things Borders Group CEO George Jones told his employees when he took over was that he wants to be challenged.

Jones later e-mailed this addendum:I should note that those who criticize also be willing to fall in line and support the final decision of the CEO, even if they disagree. A large company is not a democracy. It needs a leader to make a decision.”

“Let’s face it, nobody likes to receive criticism whether it comes from above or below,” says \Craig, Hunt, CEO of Cortex Resort Living. But his goal is to accept criticism as willingly as he did on the way up.

Getting straight to the heart of the matter, your heart is an amazing organ that works nonstop. In fact, long before you finish reading this article, this tireless muscle will pump blood to every cell in your body!

But before doctors recognized this vital role the heart plays, it was thought to be the center of emotion. The early Chinese believed that happiness came from the heart, while Egyptians thought that intelligence and emotions originated there.

In the fourth century B.C., Greek philosopher Aristotle observed chick embryos and stated that the heart was the body’s most important organ. But it wasn’t until the 17th century that English physician William Harvey clearly explained the heart’s role in circulate blood.

What does it do?
Located almost in the center of the chest, the human heart beats about 100,000 times a day, sending blood to the lungs. There the blood gathers oxygen and then circulates it throughout the body before returning to the heart. The heart pumps the body’s entire blood supply of nearly six liters through the body three times in less than one minute! That’s quite an achivement for an organ that weighs half a kilo!

Have a heart
This amazing muscle began working for you long before you were born. In fact, it started pumping four weeks after you were conceived and will continue pumping until your final moments. That means your heart will beat more than 2.5 billion times during your lifetime!

Pick up a tennis ball and give it a hard squeeze. In doing that, you use about the same amount of energy your heart uses each time it beats. Now imagine squeezing that tennis ball hard 70 times a minute, 24 hours a day for a lifetime. That requires a lot of energy! In fact, in one hour your heart produces enough energy to lift almost one ton or weight a meter off the ground!

Each day your heart pumps blood through thousands of kilometers of vessel . Some vessels are as large as hose; other are less than the thickness of a human hair. Laid end to end, there are 161,000 km of blood vessels in an adult’s body. That’s enough to circle the world at the equator four times!

You stay alive because of that hard-working muscle in your chest. Be thankful for it – from the bottom of your heart!

Change the World, One Loan at a Time
A small loan can make a big difference
Feb.14 2008

Ever wish you could give a little money and really help change someone’s life? Now you can, and it’s as simple as logging on to the Internet at Kiva.org. Kiva helps you make a loan to a specific entrepreneur in a developing nation. By loaning as little as US$25 or as much as US$100, you empower a low-income, small-business owner to build a business by providing the capital the person needs. You can watch as your loan transforms this person’s business, life and family by helping him to open a food market or her to sell handmade clothes. Throughout the course of the loan, which is typically six to 12 months, you receive e-mail journal updates from the business you have helped.

And since it’s a loan, you are eventually repaid. The loan payback record is outstanding at almost 100 percent. You can check the risk rating that Kiva assigns each field partner. The local field partner is the intermediary that processes the loan to the business owner. And once your loan is paid back, you can make a loan to another business owner.

Kiva means “unity” in the African language of Swahili. Uniting everyday people like you and me with struggling businesses makes a difference. So become a microfinancier and help change the world.

Feb. 15 2008

There are hundreds of them. Well-known appliances, electronics, footwear, apparel and computers-the famous brands- they’re what we call name brands. These products are not necessarily successful because companies pour millions of dollars into promoting them-though that certainly doesn’t hurt(这些产品并不是因为公司花费大量金钱进行广告投资而成功,当然广告投资也没有降低品牌的销量). People spend money on name brand products for several reasons:

1.Quality. A name brand can’t become a name brand without quality. If it’s a food, the ingredients are wholesome; if it’s a machine, quality parts are a must. Quality attracts customers and keeps them coming back.

2.Consistency. Over time, customers grow to expect a certain level of quality and performance from a product or service. If I’m in a foreign country and need shampoo, I’m going to buy a name brand because I know it will be good. Name brands deliver quality consistently, regardless of time or location.

3.Customer Service. Admittedly, some substandard name brand products occasionally get shipped out. To deal with this inevitability, smart companies help and support customers. For name brand companies, customer satisfaction is a priority.

These three qualities give name brand products longevity. And that’s worth a little extra money, right?

The second half -- the name brand from studio classroom
What’s the big deal about name brands? One term used for products that aren’t name brands is generic, which means “common.” Sometimes I get the feeling that the only reason people buy name brand products is because they fear being labeled “common.” Generic products have the stigma of being boring and ugly while name brand products are exciting and stylish. Well, I’m not buying it. I’m buying generic. Why?

Cost. Generic products can be from a quarter up to even half off the price of the comparable name brand product. Check for yourself. The next time you’re in a drug store find the generic medicines or store brands and compare them with their name brand counterparts. The generic brands have the same active ingredients as the name brands but are considerably less expensive. Buying them instead is a no-brainer!

The same stuff, only in a different disguise Sometimes, discount brand companies manufacture similar—if not identical- products for the more famous label companies. What that means is the quality of the less expensive brand products is about the same as the name brand products—it’s just the label that’s different! So, save some money and go with the less famous brand, or go generic!

Now, what’s your viewpoint?

Wholesome(adj)
Phil only eats wholesome snacks like raisins, seeds and unsalted peanuts.

Inevitability (n)
The inevitability of developing lung problems didn’t stop my uncle from smoking three packs of cigarettes a day.

Generic(adj)一般的
The generic brand cereal was half the price of the name brand cereal, and it tasted the same!

Stigma(n)
Years ago, there was a great stigma associated with divorce. Today, it’s more acceptable.

Considerably(adv)相当地
The morning traffic becomes considerably heavier after 8 a.m.

Impressions of St. Peter''s School

A teacher finds out how different life is at this New Zealand boarding school

Feb. 18 2008

St. Peter''s School, Cambridge
Located on a beautiful 100-acre campus, St. Peter''s is an independent, coeducational school with students from grades 7 to 13. Of the 1,000 students who attend this school, 430 of them board here, and 60 students come from abroad.

Diary
As my host drove me through the gate at St. Peter''s School, my first thought was that this must be a school for royalty! Fields of green grass surrounded us as we made our way up the long driveway lined with gigantic trees.
As I walked around the school, the different colored shirts of the school uniforms (according to grade) caught my attention. Both the boys and the girls looked very smart. The international student manager, Rosanne, told me that the rules for both dress and behavior are very strict. No form of physical contact between boys and girls is allowed on campus. I think this rule is great because students come to learn, not socialize.
The boys’ boarding houses are across the campus from the girls’ houses. The younger students share bedrooms while students in years 12 and 13 have their won rooms. I feel design is really good because younger students need support and older students need their space.

Second half hour--studio class room--St.Perter's school 2

At St.Peter’s, a holistic style of teaching is emphasized with the goal to develop and strengthen students’ minds, bodies and spirits. They teach the students how to learn, which develops and broadens their minds. The school also requires that students participate in two PE classes per week and extracurricular sports to help their bodies become strong. In addition, the school enriches students’ spirits through teaching about Christianity.

For many classes, students are grouped together based on similar academic performance, an approach called streaming. When observing an English class, I discovered three major differences between the classrooms at my school and those at St. Peter’s. First, the classes at St. Peter’s are small with an average of 12 students. Second, I was struck by how eager the students were to answer questions or voice their opinions. The interaction was excellent, and the students participated enthusiastically in class activities. Third, the teacher gave a lot of class time for finishing homework and a lot of individual assistance to students as they worked.

This was a valuable learning experience for me, and I plan to incorporate what I learned at St. Peter’s into my own classes.

Most people explore only the sights above ground, but exploring underground yields exceptional beauty for those adventurous enough to try it. These adventurers will be richly rewarded as they navigate through each of these caves and view their wonders.

Carlsbad Caverns, New Mexico, United States
Carlsbad Caverns National Park, which houses one of the most spectacular and extensive cave systems in the world, lies in the mountains of southeastern New Mexico. These 110 or more magnificent limestone caves were created by sulfuric acid dissolving the limestone over time. Visitors look in amazement at the beauty in immense, underground chambers like the 25-story-high Big Room, which is one-third of a mile wide and nearly 4,000 feet long. Hanging stalactities, which vary from thin needles to huge chandeliers, fill the caverns, along with many beautifully sculptured formations. Visitors can experience the caves’ beauty on their own or join a tour that will take them deeper inside the caves to view their wonders. In addition, from mid-May to mid-October, visitors can watch nearly 400,000 bats exit the Caverns at sunset. Every evening, the bats embark on an eating frenzy where they consume several tons of insects.

The assembling Dragon Cave, an extraordinary masterpiece of nature, offers scenery too amazing to miss. (don't miss )The cave gets its name from the surrounding mountain pinnacles outside the cave, which resemble circling dragons. And inside the cave, stalactites suggest images of dragons flying on clouds or playing with water. By foot and by boat, visitors can admire spectacular stalagmites growing up out of the floor, waterfalls and underground rivers in this 1000-meter-long cave system. Colorful lights add wonder to this fairyland.

In this cave, adventurers explore ancient limestone chambers and passages to enjoy stunning underground scenery. The Cathedral’s acoustics are so pure that singers like Kiri Te Kanawa, the famous New Zealand opera singer, have performed here. The highlight of a cave tour is a unique boat trip through the spectacular Glowworm Grotto. In this dark, silent place, thousands of tiny living lights belonging to glowworms dot the ceiling and walls. They light the way as visitors glide quietly beneath them on dark water that reflects the lights from the glowworms.

The Niah Great Cave is host to half a million black-nest swiftlets that make their nests high in the cave’s walls. These birds’ nests help feed Asia’s appetite for bird’s nest soup. For generations, local collectors of birds'' nests have earned a living by climbing dangerously high on bamboo ladders to harvest the nests. The Great Cave is known not only for its birds’ nests but also for the human inhabitants who lived here 40,000 years ago. Ancient artifacts including the oldest human skull in Southeast Asia, have been found inside. When evening comes, thousands of birds fly into the Great Cave as thousands of bats fly out. Witnesses call the scene spectacular!

Second Half hour--studio classroom  Harry Winston: Jeweler to the Stars
Why do Hollywood's biggest stars love Harry's jewelry?

At this year's Academy Awards, Hollywood's elite will dress up in designer gowns and sparkling jewels. Much of that expensive jewelry comes from the House of Winston, founded by Harry Winston.

Born in 1896, Harry was the son of poor Ukrainian immigrants. His father owned a small jewelry store in New York, and from him, Harry learned to love jewels. Although he had no formal schooling, Harry knew gems. He once spotted a ring on a tray of inexpensive jewelry and bought it for 25 cents. He then sold it for a handsome profit as he had recognized the stone as an emerald. In 1932, he opened Harry Winston, Inc.

Winston was the first person to use the Academy Awards ceremony as a publicity tool. For the 1943 Academy Awards, Best Actress Nominee Jennifer Jones borrowed jewelry from Winston, and she won the Oscar. Since then, many nominated actresses have borrowed and worn Harry Winston for good luck!

At one time, Winston owned the famous Hope Diamond, once the property of French King Louis XIV. He donated it to the Smithsonian Institution in 1958 to fulfill his dream of starting a national gem collection.

Winston once said, “People will stare. Make it worth their while.” Anyone wearing his fine jewels is worth staring at.

Save Money When Shopping
Don't pay too much for something – read this and save money!

If you're like most people, you love to save money. You probably try to buy things when they're marked down. When you go to purchase an item, sometimes you may find that it's sold out. In that case, at a grocery store or discount store, you can ask for a rain check. The rain check allows you to pay the sale price for the item after the sale is over.

Another way to save money is to look for products that offer rebates. After buying the product, you need to fill out the rebate form. Then mail it to the manufacturer with your cash register receipt and the UPC from the product package. In four to six weeks, the company will send the stated amount of money to you.

When you want to buy expensive items like cars, refrigerators or furniture, it’s best to shop around. You can also ask for a better price, especially if you want to buy more than one item.

Why pay full price for something when there are so many ways to save?

mark down 降价,标签标识出来, discount, on sale
比如有人请你吃饭,但是你太忙了今天实在去不了,可以说 can I take a rain check?

A Love Affair With Precious Jewels
From warriors to rulers, people have long cherished jewels
All that glitters isn''t gold; sometimes it''s colored gemstones or sparkling jewels! For thousands of years, people have adorned themselves with all types of jewelry. Feathers, bones, teeth, stones and shells were some of the earliest materials used. But over time, sparkling gemstones discovered beneath the earth''s surface replaced these simple materials. The precious stones varied from region to region. Here are a few of the best-known and most sought after.

“Stone from heaven”
A Chinese proverb states that “One can put a price on gold, but jade is priceless.(黄金有价,玉无价)” An important source of jade was discovered over 7,500 years ago near the Kunlun Mountains. The jade, called the “stone from heaven,” became valued for its intense emerald-green color and its strength. Jade is still valued for its beauty today, not only in China but also around the world.

“Diamonds are a girl’s best friend”
During the fourth century B.C., India was one of the first countries to discover and mine diamonds. Two of the more famous diamonds from India are the Hope Diamond and the Darya-i-Nur (“Sea of Light”), a rare pink diamond that weighs anywhere from 175 to 195 carats. Today, diamonds serve as the gem of choice for wedding rings and other expensive jewelry.

“The Queen of Gems”
Pearls are said to be the oldest-known gem. Legends state that ancient Egyptians prized the jewel so much they were buried with them.

Throughout the centuries natural pearls were highly valued and worn only by society’s wealthiest members. But after Kokichi Mikimoto introduced cultured pearls in the early 1900s, the jewel became more available and affordable.

“The King’s Gems”
The ruby, sometimes called the “King of Gems,” can be traced back to ancient Sanskrit writings. The blood-red stone was believed to have healing and protective properties and was worn into battle by early warriors.

Because of the rarity of a gem-quality ruby, some large rubies have sold for more than flawless diamonds.

“The Gem of Gems”
Sapphires have long been considered a royal gemstone. Traditionally, kings wore them around their necks for protection and good fortune. Perhaps because the brilliant blue stones symbolize(represent) pure and wise rulers, the British Crown Jewels contain many large sapphires.  [ 'sæfaiə ]

Precious vs. semi-precious jewels.
Traditionally, only rubies, diamonds, sapphires and emeralds were considered precious jewels. All other gemstones were classified as semi-precious stones. Today, howerer, many jewelers simply refer to all natural jewels as “precious.” All most customers would agree: Whether they own jade or diamonds, their jewels are precious to them!

Why do we have an extra day this year?
Every four years, February has an extra day – the 29th. In fact, that's today! A year with 29 days in February, instead of the normal 28, is called a "leap year." The extra day is necessary to keep the calendar in line with the earth's movement around the sun. If it weren't for leap years, the four seasons would not start at the right time.

Check out these fun facts about this special addition to the calendar:

>>>During leap years, the days after February 29th “leap” ahead. For example, in 2007, March 1st was a Thursday. But in 2008, March 1st will be a Saturday. The Friday will be “leapt over.” That’s how leap year got its name.

People born on February 29th are often called “leaplings.” They celebrate their birthdays on February 28th or March 1st during non-leap years.

In Scotland, being born on February 29th is considered unlucky. In Greece, getting married during a leap year is also thought to be bad luck.

Years ago, February 29 was the only day that women could propose to men. And in Great Britain, laws once existed that called for a man to pay a fine if he turned a woman down.

take a leap in the dark:冒险举动 decide to do but don't know the outcome
look before you leap:先评估风险,先考虑事情后果再做这件事
leap at a chance:抓住,把握住机会 the things that you like to do.
leap to conclusions:随便下结论,过早定论(通常用在否定句) conclude without knowing the whole story.

leap year
1 The kidnapped girl leapt out of the car and was badly hurt.

Addition(n)
My parents made an addition to the house last year. They added on two more rooms.

in line
1 The cost at the project is very much in line with our expectations.
2 Our school holidays stay in line with official government holidays.
